How do I share and verify Orivet DNA reports on BreedBuddies?

Genetic screening has transformed responsible dog breeding. By identifying hereditary disease mutations, coat colour genetics, and trait markers before a mating occurs, breeders can eliminate inherited conditions that have plagued certain breeds for decades.

Through our partnership with Orivet Genetic Pet Care, BreedBuddies makes it seamless to link verified DNA profiles directly to your dog's listing, providing instant compatibility clarity for potential matches.

1. What is an Orivet Full Breed Profile (FBP)?

An Orivet Full Breed Profile is a comprehensive diagnostic panel tailored specifically to your dog's breed. It tests for:

  • Known Hereditary Diseases: Including Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA), Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), Exercise Induced Collapse (EIC), Von Willebrand's Disease (vWD), and breed-specific neurological/metabolic disorders.
  • Coat Colour & Type Genetics: Agouti, Brown/Chocolate, Dilute, Piebald, Furnishings, and Curly Coat alleles.
  • DNA Verification & Parentage: Unique DNA profile barcode confirming genetic identity.

2. Demystifying Genetic Status: Clear, Carrier & Affected

One of the greatest benefits of DNA testing is preserving genetic diversity while preventing disease. Understanding inheritance mode is crucial:

Genetic Status

Meaning

Breeding Implication

Clear (Negative)

Carries zero copies of the mutated gene.

Can be safely bred to Clear or Carrier partners.

Carrier

Carries one copy of an autosomal recessive gene; does not develop the disease.

Must only be bred to a genetically Clear mate. Zero puppies will be affected.

Affected

Carries two copies of the mutation; may show clinical symptoms.

Ethical breeders avoid breeding affected dogs for welfare reasons.

Carriers are Valuable for Genetic Diversity
Never automatically eliminate carriers of recessive traits from a breeding program. Eliminating carriers drastically shrinks the gene pool. By pairing a Carrier with a verified Clear mate for an autosomal recessive condition, you maintain genetic diversity while ensuring no offspring will be clinically affected by that specific condition.

Scope of Genetic Screening
While DNA screening provides invaluable information regarding specific tested genetic variants, it does not guarantee an entirely disease-free litter or replace comprehensive veterinary evaluations, orthopedic scoring, and clinical examinations.
