Why and how should I keep breeding dog health records up to date?

In ethical breeding, health records are not static milestones completed once and forgotten. While genetic DNA markers remain unchanged throughout a dog's life, physical health, reproductive fertility, and clinical soundness evolve over time.

Keeping your dog's health clearances current on BreedBuddies ensures accurate match recommendations, builds confidence with peer breeders, and upholds the highest welfare standards.

1. Clearances: Permanent vs. Time-Sensitive

Understand the validity lifespan of different canine health evaluations:

Health Evaluation

Validity Window

Recommended Renewal Cadence

DNA Full Breed Profile

Lifetime

Never expires (permanent genetic blueprint).

Orthopedic Scores (Hips/Elbows)

Lifetime (after 12–24 months)

Official CHS/PennHIP radiographs taken after bone maturity are permanent.

ACES Eye Clearances

12 Months

Annual re-examination by a veterinary ophthalmologist.

Specialist Cardiac Screening

12–24 Months

Bi-annual or annual re-evaluation depending on breed risk.

Semen Evaluation

6–12 Months

Prior to each major breeding season or interstate shipment.

Vaginal/Reproductive Swabs

Per Season

Pre-mating cycle review for active breeding bitches.

2. The Impact on Match Recommendations

BreedBuddies' matching suggestions take profile completeness and verified health clearances into account:

  • Profiles with verified, current health badges provide greater transparency to prospective breeding partners.
  • If a time-limited certificate (such as an ACES annual eye clearance) reaches the end of its 12-month validity period, its status indicator is marked as due for renewal so prospective matches have clear, up-to-date information.
  • Updating your records ensures your dogs present accurate clinical information when fellow breeders explore compatible partners.

3. How to Update Existing Records

Once a health clearance has been verified by the Woof Team, breeders cannot edit the figures directly. This security control prevents unauthorized score alterations:

  1. When you receive an updated ACES eye sheet or new semen analysis, go to your dog's Health section.
  2. Click Submit Updated Clearance.
  3. Upload the new veterinary certificate.
  4. The Woof Team typically reviews and verifies the update within 1 to 2 business days, restoring its current verified indicator.
