# NSW - Entire Female Dog Rules

# New South Wales — Entire Female (Breeding Bitch) Dog: Legal & Registration Guide

**BreedBuddies Knowledge Base — Australia**
*Last verified: 9 July 2026*

## Quick Facts

| Question | Answer |
| ---- |
| **Is desexing mandatory?** | No state-wide mandate, but a higher registration fee applies if not desexed by 6 months. |
| **Can she stay entire?** | Yes, no permit needed just to own her. |
| **Identifier needed** | A Breeder Identification Number (BIN), mandatory once she has a litter (from 1 December 2025). |
| **Female dog cap** | 20 non-desexed adult females per premises, unless exempt (from 21 November 2024). |
| **Lifetime limits** | 5 litters or 3 caesareans, whichever comes first (from 1 December 2025). |

## Summary
NSW's breeder obligations attach to whoever's dog becomes pregnant — the female's owner, not the stud's. Register and microchip her as normal; the extra rules (BIN, dog cap, litter limits, staffing ratio) apply once she's actually used for breeding.

## Registering Your Breeding Female
* **Microchip** by 12 weeks (or before sale) and **register** on the NSW Pet Registry by 6 months.
* Obtain a **BIN** before she has a litter (mandatory from 1 December 2025).
* Track non-desexed females on your premises against the **20-dog cap**, unless exempt.
* Track her lifetime litters (max 5) and caesareans (max 3).
* If running a breeding business, meet the **1:20 staff-to-dog ratio**.

## Litter & Welfare Limits
* A maximum of **5 litters or 3 caesareans**, whichever comes first, over her lifetime; vet approval is required before a 3rd pregnancy if she's already had 2 caesareans.
* Up to **20 non-desexed adult females** per premises unless exempt (exempted breeders capped at 50 from December 2026).
* Advertisements for puppies born after 1 December 2025 must show both the microchip number and BIN.
