# Brachycephalic - Breeding Minimum Health Requirements

# Minimum Health Requirements Before Breeding a Brachycephalic Dog

**BreedBuddies Knowledge Base — Australia**
*Last verified: 5 August 2026*

Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds — including French Bulldogs, English Bulldogs, Pugs and Boston Terriers — carry a disproportionate share of hereditary and conformation-related health risks. This article sets out the minimum health, genetic and conformation standards a dog should meet before being used for breeding, and the evidence a breeder should hold on file to demonstrate it.

## Airway Assessment (BOAS Screening)

### Required Tests
* BOAS functional grading (0–3)
* Nares assessment (stenotic vs open)
* Soft palate evaluation
* Tracheal diameter check (radiograph or CT)

### Minimum Standard to Breed
* BOAS Grade 0 or 1 only
* Grade 2–3 dogs must not be bred
* Dogs with any airway surgery history must not be bred

### Evidence Required
* Veterinary BOAS certificate
* Functional movement video
* Declaration of no airway surgery

## Spinal Health & Imaging

### Required Tests
* Spinal X-rays (T3–L3 region)
* Hemivertebrae screening
* Tail-set evaluation
* Neurological exam

### Minimum Standard to Breed
* No clinically significant hemivertebrae
* No spinal compression
* No hind-limb weakness or incontinence

### Evidence Required
* Radiology report
* Veterinary clearance letter

## Genetic Testing

### Core DNA Tests
* CMR1
* PRA
* DM
* HUU
* Cystinuria (breed-dependent)
* Colour genetics (to avoid high-risk combinations)

### Minimum Standard to Breed
* Dogs must be Clear or Carrier only
* Carriers must be paired with Clear mates
* Affected dogs must not be bred

### Evidence Required
* Full DNA panel certificate
* Colour genetics report

## Eye Health

### Required Tests
* Ophthalmic exam
* Corneal health check
* Eyelid conformation assessment
* Dry eye (KCS) test

### Minimum Standard to Breed
* No history of corneal ulcers
* No cherry eye
* No eyelid surgery
* Eyes must sit within the socket (not excessively protruding)

### Evidence Required
* Ophthalmology report

## Conformation Thresholds

### Minimum Physical Standards
* Open nostrils (not slit-like)
* Muzzle length at least one-third of skull length
* Moderate neck length
* Body Condition Score (BCS) 4–6
* Tail must not be tightly corkscrewed
* Minimal skin folds; no chronic dermatitis

### Minimum Standard to Breed
* Must pass conformation-for-health exam
* No extreme features that compromise breathing, vision, mobility or thermoregulation

## Cardiac & General Health

### Required Tests
* Cardiac auscultation
* Patella check
* Orthopaedic exam
* Heat tolerance assessment

### Minimum Standard to Breed
* No heart murmurs
* No patella luxation
* No exercise intolerance
* No heat-related collapse

## Neurological Screening

### Required Tests
* Chiari-like malformation screening (breed-relevant)
* Syringomyelia MRI (for high-risk breeds)
* Hydrocephalus assessment

### Minimum Standard to Breed
* No neurological pain
* No phantom scratching
* No MRI evidence of syrinx formation (breed-specific)

## Behaviour & Temperament

### Required Tests
* Behavioural assessment
* Reactivity screening
* Separation tolerance
* Human-dog interaction test

### Minimum Standard to Breed
* No aggression
* No severe anxiety
* No fear-biting
* Stable temperament suitable for family environments

## Reproductive Fitness

### Required Tests
* Fertility assessment
* Natural mating ability
* Pelvic conformation (females)

### Minimum Standard to Breed
* Natural mating possible
* No history of dystocia
* Avoid caesarean-only lines

## Required Documentation
* BOAS certificate
* Spinal imaging report
* Full DNA panel
* Ophthalmology report
* Conformation-for-health checklist
* Behavioural assessment
* Reproductive fitness certificate
* Signed declaration: No airway, spinal, or eyelid surgery performed

## Executive Summary

| Category | Must Pass | Cannot Breed If |
| ---- |
| **Airway** | BOAS Grade 0–1 | Grade 2–3 or airway surgery |
| **Spine** | Clear imaging | Hemivertebrae or neuro signs |
| **Genetics** | Clear/Carrier | Affected |
| **Eyes** | Healthy | Ulcers, cherry eye, surgery |
| **Conformation** | Functional | Extreme muzzle shortening |
| **Behaviour** | Stable | Aggression/anxiety |
| **Reproduction** | Natural | Caesarean-only lines |
