Question 1

NSW - Entire Male Dog Rules

Accepted Answer

NSW — Entire Male (Stud) Dog: Legal & Registration Guide

BreedBuddies Knowledge Base — Australia Last verified: 8 July 2026

Quick Answer: Do You Need a Breeding Licence?

No. Owning an entire (not desexed) male in NSW doesn’t require any licence or permit — just register him as normal and pay the slightly higher "not desexed" fee. A Breeder Identification Number (BIN) is only needed if the dog produces a litter, which can’t happen for a male — that’s on the female’s owner.

Quick Summary

| Question | Answer | | ---- | | Desexing mandatory? | No, but an extra annual fee applies past 12 weeks of age. | | Can you keep an entire male? | Yes — no permit, no breeding licence needed. | | BIN needed? | Only once the dog produces a litter — not for owning an entire male. | | Recent change | From 1 Dec 2025, any litter (even accidental) needs a BIN shown with the microchip number in ads. |

What the Law Says

All dogs: microchipped by 12 weeks, registered by 6 months.
No state-wide desexing requirement — just a higher registration fee if he stays entire.
Breeder duties (BIN, ads, welfare code) fall on the female’s owner, not the stud dog’s.

Can You Keep an Entire Male?

Yes — no special licence or exemption needed. Just register and microchip him as usual, and pay the higher "not desexed" fee instead of the discounted desexed rate. He only becomes subject to breeder rules if he produces a litter, which doesn’t happen for a ma

Question 2

VIC - Entire Male Dog Rules

Accepted Answer

Victoria — Entire Male (Stud) Dog: Legal & Registration Guide

BreedBuddies Knowledge Base — Australia Last verified: 8 July 2026

Quick Answer: Do You Need a Breeding Licence?

No. If your council lets him stay entire (not desexed) — usually via membership of a body like Dogs Victoria, with him registered to it — that’s all you need to stand him at stud. No separate breeding licence is needed. A PER source number is only needed if you advertise, sell, or give away puppies.

Quick Summary

| Question | Answer | | ---- | | Desexing mandatory? | Not under the Act itself, but most councils require it via their own resolution. | | Can you keep an entire male? | Yes, if you qualify for a council exemption. No breeding licence needed once registered. | | Most common exemption | Membership of a body like Dogs Victoria, with the dog registered to it. | | Identifier for stud-only owners | None — PER numbers are only for selling/advertising/giving away a dog. | | Does "microbreeder" status help? | No — it’s only about owning ≤2 fertile females, not a desexing exemption. See FAQ. |

What the Law Says

The Act itself doesn’t require every dog to be desexed. But it lets councils refuse to register a non-desexed dog, and most (especially metro councils) have done so. Exemptions from any council desexing rule include:

Dogs owned by a registered domestic animal business, used for breeding in that business.
Dogs owned by a current member of

ACT — Entire Male (Stud) Dog: Legal & Registration Guide

BreedBuddies Knowledge Base — Australia Last verified: 8 July 2026

Quick Answer: Do You Need a Breeding Licence?

No — not just to stand him at stud. Once you hold a licence to keep a dog sexually entire and he’s registered accordingly with Domestic Animal Services, that’s all you need. A separate breeders licence is only required if you plan to breed a litter yourself.

Quick Summary

| Question | Answer | | ---- | | Desexing mandatory? | Yes, over 6 months old — unless you hold an entire-dog licence. | | Can you keep an entire male? | Yes, with a licence to keep a dog sexually entire. | | Does that licence let you breed? | No — it only covers staying entire. A separate breeders licence is needed to breed a litter yourself. |

What the Law Says

Dogs over 6 months must be desexed, unless the owner holds an entire-dog licence from Domestic Animal Services.
Selling an undesexed dog over 6 months old is unlawful without a permit.
Planning to breed a litter yourself (not just stud services)? You need a separate breeders licence too.

Can You Keep an Entire Male?

If you’re only offering stud services (not breeding litters yourself), you just need the entire-dog licence — **no separ

Question 5

WA - Entire Male Dog Rules

Accepted Answer

Western Australia — Entire Male (Stud) Dog: Legal & Registration Guide

BreedBuddies Knowledge Base — Australia Last verified: 16 July 2026

Quick Answer: Do You Need a Breeding Licence?

No. There's no stud-specific licence in WA — just register him as normal with your local council. An "approval to breed" scheme (introduced by the Dog Amendment (Stop Puppy Farming) Act 2021) passed Parliament in 2021 but has not commenced. So, no breeding approval is currently required to keep or use him at stud.

Quick Summary

| Question | Answer | | ---- | | Desexing mandatory? | Passed into law, not yet in force. Will eventually apply by 2 years of age, not 6 months. | | Can you keep an entire male? | Yes — no licence needed currently. | | Licensing | No stud-specific licence yet — an "approval to breed" scheme has passed Parliament but has not commenced. |

What the Law Says

Governed by the Dog Act 1976, as amended by the Dog Amendment (Stop Puppy Farming) Act 2021.
Pet shop and dog-supply approval provisions commenced 26 May 2025 — but these apply to pet shops and dog suppliers, not individual stud dog owners.
The bigger changes — mandatory desexing by 2 years old and an "approval to breed" requirement for anyone keeping a dog entire past that age — have passed Parliament but are still not in force.
The centralised PetsWA registration system meant to support these changes had its development contract ended in 2025, so a firm commen

Question 6

SA - Entire Female Dog Rules

Accepted Answer

South Australia — Entire Female (Breeding Bitch) Dog: Legal & Registration Guide

BreedBuddies Knowledge Base — Australia Last verified: 9 July 2026

Quick Facts

| Question | Answer | | :--- | :--- | | Is desexing mandatory? | Yes, for dogs born on or after 1 July 2018, by 6 months of age. | | Can she stay entire? | Yes, if registered as a breeder through Dogs and Cats Online (DACO), or another exemption applies (born before 2018, working livestock dog, vet exemption). | | Do you need to sell puppies to register? | No — "kept specifically for breeding" is its own qualifying reason under DACO. | | Cost | Free with current membership of a recognised body (Dogs SA, FASA, Cat Fancy of SA); $75/year standalone DACO breeder registration otherwise. | | Coming change | A new breeder licensing scheme, passed in June 2025, is expected to commence in 2027 and will replace DACO breeder registration with a stricter, assessed licence. |

Summary

The desexing exemption in SA is tied to DACO breeder registration, and it's the female that generates this requirement in practice — a stud-only male rarely needs breeder status at all, since the obligation follows the dog that becomes pregnant. A cap of 50 fertile female dogs per breeder/premises has applied since 2022.

Under the Dog and Cat Management (Breeder Reforms) Amendment Act 2025, today's $75 DACO registration is being replaced by a licensing scheme with background checks, facility assessment, and
